This is the third and final chapter of the main trilogy of the Batman saga: Arkham. It was released on June 23, 2015 worldwide for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Microsoft Windows platforms, 24 in Australia, on July 2 of the same year in Japan, where it is an exclusive of the Sony home console; the versions for macOS and Linux have been deleted.
The title is set in a redesigned Gotham City. The map is four times larger than Batman: Arkham City. The graphics of the characters and settings is even more detailed and realistic, in fact the reactions of clothes or parts of the body (such as hair) to movements, wind and weather conditions are also highlighted. The possibility of driving the Batmobile was introduced, which also plays a fundamental role during the game's history. The enemies on the road are much more numerous and interact with the surrounding environment (for example, they draw graffiti on the walls or destroy cars and surrounding objects). The multiplayer mode is absent, as Rocksteady's intention has always been to focus on the single player, while the challenges of the puzzle come back.
Due to serious technical problems encountered by many users in the PC version of the game, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment suspends its sale on June 25, 2015, two days after its publication, republishing it on October 28, 2015.
Just over a year has passed since the Batman events: Arkham City: the prison district has been freed and now houses an impressive construction site. A consortium of wealthy men, led by Bruce Wayne and Wayne Enterprises, had launched an ambitious urban redevelopment project to turn that disastrous area into the newest of Gotham City neighborhoods; unfortunately, the cruelties of Hugo Strange and his teacher, Ra's al Ghul, have led many jurists to question the legitimacy of prisoner condemnations in the structure: many trials have been reopened and many of Gotham's most atrocious criminals have been released due to the injustice of their previous decisions (even Quincy Sharp, despite its connection with Strange, came out clean). After the unexpected death of Joker, Batman seemed to disappear, obscured by dark concerns, and Commissioner James Gordon eventually decided to cremate the body of the mad criminal in great secrecy, so that nothing of him would remain to torment the city. The Gotham and Batman police expected an uproar due to the disappearance of Joker, between power struggles, gangs of exasperated followers or criminal acts committed by the destroyed Harley Quinn, but nothing happened: all the criminals of the city, even the most ferocious , they kept a low profile and for many it was a sign that Batman, having finally decided to kill his historic nemesis, had managed to scare off the Gotham criminals enough to have them concealed. Both Gordon and the Dark Knight himself, however, knew very well that it would only be a matter of time before something terrible happened and in fact, in the criminal world of the city, rumors about a secret pact between the criminals in Gotham's costume and a new "player" appeared on the scene of the city, someone powerful and terrible that everyone is afraid of.
During the night of Halloween, in a bar in Gotham, something terrible happens: a gas bag of Scarecrow's fear is introduced into the room. It is not, however, the usual hallucinogenic gas: it is a new and more powerful mixture, which leaves permanent effects. Those present are immediately caught by terrible hallucinations, they go crazy and start to slaughter each other; in a few minutes, they are all dead. Soon after, all the big screens in the city began to convey the terror message of Jonathan Crane: that had been the effect of only a few ounces of his new compound. Gotham will only have 24 hours, then the Scarecrow will unleash hell by releasing the gas throughout the city. In a few hours, the chaos explodes and the means are prepared to evacuate the population. The next night, the city is semi-deserted: only a few citizens, the police and criminals have remained and the war explodes on the streets. Criminals like the Penguin, Two Faces and their likes begin to emerge from the darkness in which they hid and panic in the streets. Gotham is in the hands of madmen and the police do not even have enough men to do it: Batman must get into action.
No one knows where the Scarecrow is, or what his men are; There are also strange voices about him: some say that, under the mask, his face is completely scarred because of Killer Croc (the last time Batman saw Crane, in fact, he was being dragged into the water by man - crocodile during the Batman events: Arkham Asylum), according to others it would have been scarred by itself. What is certain is that his determination has something different and above all it is not only: there is talk of a mysterious accomplice. The police are too busy to quell the riots, stem the urban warfare and prepare for a possible spread of the new gas to investigate; Gordon does his best, relieved by the thought that his daughter Barbara has been evacuated and is therefore safe. But it's not like that: Barbara is actually Oracle and is locked up in her secret headquarters with her computers, to give Batman tactical support in such an extreme and dangerous situation. In addition to her, Bruce can count on the help of all his allies: Lucius Fox and Alfred are always in contact with him, while Robin (Tim Drake) is patrolling the city, helping those in need.
Batman has a double task: to discover Crane's location and find an antidote as quickly as possible for his new and very powerful gas. The only clue you have is the presence of a military vehicle in a city of unknown origin: it is an extremely advanced tank, something far beyond the usual arsenal of the criminals of Gotham. Signs have been painted on the vehicle, like brands, which are very reminiscent of the logo of the now destroyed Arkham asylum. Batman traces the tank to Chinatown and manages to knock him out with his new Batmobile, a brand new model recently developed by Fox, equipped with non-lethal weapons to suppress urban guerrilla warfare and with its own war cannons. Batman interrogates the driver of the military vehicle, who tells him about a Scarecrow refuge in Chinatown; the Dark Knight stuns him and subtracts a syringe containing the new Crane compound, sending it immediately to Oracle to have it analyzed in the hope of finding an antidote and goes to the shelter indicated to him; unfortunately, when he breaks in, he does not find the Scarecrow at all, but of the men who are holding Poison Ivy hostage. Batman frees her and asks her what she wants from Crane: Ivy does not know much; he was in prison in Blüdhaven, when Harley Quinn broke in to free her and offer her an agreement. Joker's widow wanted him to join her and the super-criminal consortium set up by Crane and his mysterious accomplice, but he refused and was taken prisoner. Crane has a plan for Gotham, something big, and dissidents are not allowed. Batman escort Ivy to the police station, under whom an infirmary and an emergency prison have been set up. Ivy is locked up in a special cell and while every city policeman does his best to handle rampant chaos, Batman continues his hunt. Now it is headed to the Gotham Clock Tower, where Oracle has its headquarters.
