The videogame, which relates Altaïr and Ezio, the two ancestors of Desmond Miles, constitutes the final chapter of the trilogy focused on the life of Ezio Auditore.
Plot
The events of Revelations begin shortly after the end of Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood. The Assassins, relieved for having recovered the hidden Apple under the Colosseum, are however shocked by the inexplicable murder of Lucy Stillman at the hands of Desmond Miles. After stabbing her against her will, probably moved by the entity of the First Civilization known as Juno, the young man collapses unconscious. Convinced that his current condition depends on the osmosis effect, his fellow Assassins of Desmond insert him into a special program of the Animus to counteract, or at least slow down, the deterioration of his cognitive processes. While being transported by Shaun, Rebecca and William from Italy to a location for the moment unknown, Desmond wakes up on a strange island. Here he meets Person 16, incarnated in a virtual body, which reveals to Desmond that he is now in the Animus base program: his mind, in fact, has been fragmented by the experiences of Ezio and Altaïr, who have mixed his personality with those of his two illustrious ancestors. To save himself and return to the real world, Desmond will have to create a "synchronous joint", that is to relive some key moments of his ancestors not yet recovered, in order to "complete" their lives: in this way the Animus will be able to separate the existences of Ezio and Altair from that of Desmond, allowing the boy to wake up from the coma. It is further discovered that Subject 16, alias Clay Kaczmarek, has experienced a similar experience to Desmond's, but unlike these, his real body is no longer alive: therefore Clay remained a prisoner of the Animus.
This is how Desmond takes up the exploration of Ezio Auditore's memories. We discover that, over the years, the Master Assassin has not been able to calm his soul after the peace following the facts of Brotherhood. Restless because of the enigmatic revelations he witnessed, especially because he was the involuntary link between Minerva and a mysterious man called "Desmond", in 1510 Ezio discovers a letter written by his father pointing to a hidden library in Masyaf ( Altair's homeland), and full of inestimable wisdom: after ten long months of travel, the Mentor finally reaches the ancient citadel. But on his arrival Masyaf, which no longer hosts the Assassins for centuries, is instead in the hands of the Templars: they too are looking for the Altair library, whose wisdom should have led them to a mysterious "Great Temple". Ezio is captured by the Templars, but manages to free himself and kill their leader Leandros, taking away the diary of Niccolò Polo. From the diary Ezio learns of the "five keys" necessary to open the library, hidden by Polo himself in Constantinople almost 300 years earlier.
Ezio then goes to Constantinople, called Istanbul by the locals. Here he meets Yusuf Tazim, Grand Master of the Assassins of Istanbul, who is struggling with the Byzantine Templars, who fight to return the throne of Byzantium, which fell into the hands of the Ottomans, to the legitimate heir of Emperor Constantine. All this is the background of the war for the Ottoman throne between Sultan Bayezid and his son Selim, since the sultan has designated his other son, Prince Ahmet, as his heir. With the help of the Venetian bookmaker Sofia Sartor, with whom she soon established a bond, Ezio manages to find four of Masyaf's five keys (one had already been found by the Templars under the Topkapı Palace), along with many books that were believed to have been lost for centuries. He also discovers that the keys, probably forged with the same material as the Apple of Eden, contain memories of the life of the legendary Altair. Later the Assassin, after having saved from an attack by the Templars the young prince Suleiman, son of Selim, makes an alliance with the latter.
Ezio and Solimano are mistakenly led to think that Tarik Barleti, head of the Giannizzeri (the personal guards of the sultan), is in league with the Templars, and that they are plotting together to attack Byzantium. Killing him, however, discovers that actually Barleti was holding a trap to the Templars to defeat them permanently, and thanks to his information he leaves for Cappadocia, where Manuele Paleologo, the last heir of Constantine, is gathering a Templar army to regain the Byzantine crown . Once in Cappadocia, Ezio kills Paleologo, who also owned the fifth key to Masyaf. But after recovering the last key, he discovers that behind the plot of the Templars there is no other than the prince Åžehzade Ahmet, brother of Selim and uncle of Suleiman, who offers him an exchange: the five keys of Masyaf for the life of Sofia Sartor, who was captured. Ezio accepts the exchange, saves Sofia and chases Ahmet to retrieve the keys. When they reach a cliff, Ezio, Sofia and Ahmet meet Selim, who has defeated his father Bayezid in war: the new sultan kills Ahmet by throwing him from a cliff and leaving Ezio alive, thanks to the esteem that his son Suleiman nourishes towards the Master Assassin .
Once the five keys are recovered, Ezio and Sofia walk together for Masyaf, and after opening the library, they discover that there is no book: in reality it is a crypt containing the skeleton of Altair and the Apple of Eden. In Altair's hand, Ezio finds a sixth key that contains the last memory of his great ancestor, that of his death, when he locked himself in the crypt with the Apple. Ezio also finds the Fruit of Eden, but decides to leave it there where it is, fearing of its power; the artefact, however, comes to life. Ezio, speaking to Desmond through the centuries, understands and accepts his destiny as a prophet: "I am just a link to a message that eludes my understanding," he says. Meanwhile, Desmond is in the presence of Jupiter, third member of the triad of the First Civilization together with Minerva and Giunone. He says his race tried to escape the catastrophe of the solar storm without success, announced during the Assassin's Creed II events. Before the end, the triad of the First Civilization sealed all its knowledge in a crypt (probably the "Great Temple" that the Templars were looking for), located in Turin, in today's state of New York.
At this point Desmond, who has completed the key moments in the lives of his two great ancestors, awakens from his coma and says, "I know what we have to do."
